Terraria Celebrates 13th Anniversary with Release of Final Update Version
Developed by Re-Logic and released in May 2011, the highly versatile pixel sandbox game Terraria is celebrating its 13th anniversary this month. To mark this milestone, the development team has released the "first" final update, version 1.1, and made a dedicated server for version 1.1.2 available, allowing players to relive Terraria as it was in 2020.
In a recent blog post, Re-Logic shared updates on the game's status, including some planned features for the upcoming 1.4.5 update. These include rat transformations, new team members, adjustments to modding tools, and information on merchandise, among other things. They also highlighted the so-called "final update" released in honor of the 13th anniversary.
Of course, this final update is not truly the final one. Back in 2020, the team released version 1.1.2, which was touted as the "final update." However, development continued beyond that point, and the concept of the "final update" has since become a running joke within the community.
Players can access the 2020 "first final update" by right-clicking on Terraria in their Steam library, selecting properties, navigating to the betas tab, and opting into the "v1.1.2 – First Final Update" branch. This allows them to revisit the game as it was during that supposed final update. There's also another branch, "v1.0.6.1 Undeluxe Edition," which was released as an April Fools' joke, bringing players back to an early version of the game where most bugs had been fixed.
As for when the actual final update will be released, it remains as elusive as ever, much like the updates for Stardew Valley. Currently, Terraria is in full swing developing version 1.4.5, which will feature a crossover with Dead Cells. The release date for this update is still to be announced.
