Final Fantasy XIV Data Centers in all regions hit with DDoS attack

As Final Fantasy XIV maintenance gets underway today, many players are scrambling to complete their remaining weekly tasks before the servers temporarily go offline, as usual. However, a significant hurdle has emerged in the form of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, causing widespread disruptions across all Data Center regions.

DDoS attacks are an unfortunate occurrence in the world of online gaming, and Final Fantasy XIV has encountered its fair share. The most recent attack took place on April 12, with previous incidents occurring in March and December. Typically, these issues are resolved within a few hours, but today's attack appears to be particularly stubborn. Observations from veteran players reveal a surge in complaints on platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and various Discord communities.

The impact extends beyond North America, as reports on Twitter indicate players from Japan, Europe, and Oceania Data Centers are also experiencing frequent service outages. The official announcement on the Lodestone platform acknowledges these issues, with players across social media platforms reporting repeated disconnections or complete inability to log in.

Our own experience on the Primal Data Center mirrors these reports, with our associate editor Andrea Shearon encountering connectivity issues lasting only five to 15 minutes at a time, starting around 9 a.m. CST. Square Enix's team is actively investigating the problem and implementing measures to restore FFXIV to its usual stable state.

While details are currently scarce, past incidents give us hope that this disruption will be resolved swiftly. The scheduled FFXIV maintenance begins later today at 3 a.m. PDT, so there's still a window to complete seasonal event tasks amidst the ongoing outages.
